Manifesto

Anthony's story

How The Foundation Began:

I come from Trinidad and Tobago. From the very first time I saw a soccer ball being kicked, I fell in love with it. At the time, there wasn’t a professional soccer league in Trinidad and Tobago. I did not know any soccer players who were playing professionally and earning a living from the game. I admired how respected soccer players were in Europe, on and off the field, and how they were able to use their passion to take care of their family. I longed to learn how to play the game as well as they did.

One day I built up the courage to ask one of the local Trinidadian players for help to become a pro soccer player. That’s where it all began for me. Later in my career, I made my senior men’s national team debut at age 16, captained my beloved country, Trinidad and Tobago, to a top 40 world ranking, and played professional soccer in Scotland, England, China and the USA.

I obtained my UEFA “A” coaching qualification because I had the ambition to help others who were starting off their soccer careers in the same place I began mine. I want to athletes to understand that they can archive the same as I did in my career, and even more.

Teaching Beyond Soccer, Through Soccer

Our Foundation Goals

Very few of us ever get the opportunity to play professional soccer. Even if you are lucky enough to make it that far, making a livelihood that can support you and your family is far from a guarantee. At the Anthony Rougier foundation, our goal is to impact the world beyond soccer. We believe that the true measure of success for anyone involved with our programs is holistic: are you happier, more confident taking risks, a better team player, can you set your mind to something and push for it? We see soccer as a vehicle through which these important life lessons can be taught -- not the end goal.

The Anthony Rougier Foundation is a non-profit organization with a mission to develop personalized training programs for talented and underserved soccer players. Our organization is set up to truly be a player's first model. We take into account an individuals circumstances and provide them with whatever is necessary for them to find success on and off the field. Be that transportation to and from practices, personal skill development, weight and athletics training, physical therapy, academic tutoring, or college counseling, the foundation will use whatever resources possible to identify and reach those children with the potential to push on in life towards greater academic and sporting outcomes.

At the same time, our mission is not just limited to the needy, and we want to build a community around our services that can help expose children to positive role models and elite soccer training. We run camps and clinics that are open to the general public, and provide consulting services to anyone who is looking for advice in their soccer career. We believe that harnessing the collective power of the Greater Boston community is the only way to achieve our goal of helping those who would not traditionally have sporting opportunities to succeed.
